Happy people are bad consumers. They don’t waste money on useless crap.

Big Capital needs good consumers who do waste money on useless crap. Therefore Big Capital needs to make people unhappy.

Some things that make people happy: sugary drinks, McDonald, smoking, easy-going life, relax, daydreams, imagination, freedom to think and speak, optimism, hope, religion.

Big Capital needs to eliminate all that to make people so unhappy that they will buy more and more useless crap.

That seems a good explanation for a lot of trends.
