David, these days libertarianism and liberalism are thought of as opposite, but there are compatible strands of both.

In the past the two terms were considered as almost equivalent. Today, some people identify as "left libertarians," and I think these are the people drawn to technoprogressive thinking, IEET style.

I'll add that for most of my life I have thought that libertarians and liberals can understand each other and work together to advance toward common goals. Today, it seems that the gap between libetrarians and liberals is too wide to bridge, and I find this very saddening and disturbing.
